The Sport in History best article for 2025 was awarded to Dr Ross Walker, lecturer in Sport Management at Stirling University. His article "James Naismith: The creator of basketball and the Scottish Connection" argues that Scotland has a claim to the origins of Basketball. James Naismith was born in 1861 in Canada and brought up in a Scottish community in Almonte, Ontario. During his time at McGill University, Montreal, Naismith was a captain in the Fifth Regiment Royal Scots of Canada Highlanders, a position he held from 1883 to 1890. The regiment was known for its celebration of Scottish culture and Naismith maintained his Scottish identity throughout his life.
