Promoting the Study of the History of Sport

You are here: Home » Conference

The BSSH hosts an annual conference which gives members the opportunity to hear new research and discuss the history of sport. We take pride in providing a platform for rigorous research in a friendly and supportive atmosphere, and welcome contributions from postgraduate students and ECRs.  Postgraduate students who present at the conference are given free registration, and are warmly invited to consider submitting papers for the Richard Cox prize.

The 2020 Conference will be held at St. Mary's University, Twickenham Thursday 27 to Friday 28 August. Despite the current state of play, we are still fully intending to host the conference, and so issuing the call for papers as usual. This is available here, along with details of prizes that will be awarded at the conference.

This year, the BSSH is also trialling the offer of a small number of bursaries of up to £100 to contribute towards the costs of childcare, or other caring responsibilities. These are open to those wishing to present and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. If you would like more details, please contact BSSH Vice-Chair, Dr Nick Piercey (
