British Society Of Sports History ‘A’ Level Essay Competition

Open to all AS/A2 students

The British Society of Sports History wishes to announce the inaugural Sports History Essay Competition. Open to all 6th Form Students studying AS/A2 level subjects.

Students are invited to submit (via their teachers) an essay of no less than 1500 and no more than 2000 words based on any sports history-related topic from any of the current AS/A2 Physical Education and Sports Studies specifications.

The work must be the students' own and this must be verified by their teacher.

The following criteria apply:

1. The work may be produced in any word-processing format (e.g. Microsoft Word, or Open Office) and submitted as a .pdf document to avoid the possibility of text being corrupted.

2. The work must be submitted by a member of staff on behalf of the students(s) and not by students directly.

3. The work should be accompanied by a separate sheet giving the student's name, the name and address of the institution at which they are studying, the name of the member of staff submitting the work and an email address through which that member of staff may be contacted if necessary.

4. All direct quotations must be referenced and should include the name of the author being quoted, the name of the publication in which the quotation appears, the page no(s) and the name of the publisher and year of publication.

5. Any such references should appear as footnotes at the foot of the page on which they appear.

6. Any publications used as sources of information together with any publications used for direct quotations should be listed alphabetically by author at the end of the work under a heading of 'Bibliography'.

7. A good level of written English will be expected.

The winner will be announced before the end of the summer term.

Prize

The winner will receive £100 worth of book tokens and will be invited, along with one other person to the annual conference of the British Society of Sports History at the Society's expense.  Further details will be supplied to the winner at an appropriate time.
