Call for Papers
7-8 September 2012, hosted by the University of Glasgow
We are pleased to invite you to the 30th Annual Conference of the British Society of Sports History, taking place Friday and Saturday, 7-8 September 2012. The conference will take place at the University of Glasgow, based in the scenic West End of the city.
The conference will be open-themed. Papers should be a maximum of 20 minutes in length with ten minutes for questions and discussion. Ideas for Specialist Panels will also be strongly encouraged.

We would also strongly encourage postgraduates to submit abstracts. The Richard W. Cox Postgraduate Prize will be awarded for the best paper presented by a postgraduate student. Please indicate when you submit your abstract if you wish to be considered for this award.
The conference will receive the Sir Derek Birley Annual Memorial Lecture and a special lecture from the most recent winners of The Lord Aberdare Book Prize.

Postgraduate Conference Paper Prize
Part of the BSSH mission is to be accessible to and encourage new researchers, including postgraduate students and academics at an early stage in their careers.
The BSSH Committee wish to encourage the submission of papers by postgraduates to their annual conference.
The prize will be awarded to reflect outstanding work from new researchers in sports history. The winner will be selected by a panel of judges based on the content of their paper. The winning paper will be awarded £100 and a certificate. The researcher will also be invited to submit their paper to the Society’s refereed Journal Sport in History.
Application Procedure
At the time of initial abstract submission the author should indicate her/his wish to be considered for the Richard Cox Prize and also explain the basis of their eligibility, i.e. at the time of submission authors should be engaged in full or part-time postgraduate research or be within 1 year of completing their research degree.
Co-authored papers will not normally be considered for the Prize.
Style
While we encourage the submission of different kinds of papers, prize submission must be no more than 6,000 words. Style should be consistent throughout, i.e. footnotes where appropriate, and a separate list of references. Text should be no smaller than size 12 Times New Roman and be 1.5 or double spaced. Name and contact details of author, paper title, short abstract with keywords must also be included on a separate page. (Please follow SiH conventions)
The assessment process
Submissions must be developed from a paper presented at the annual conference. The BSSH Committee will select a panel of judges, who will assess the content of the papers under consideration.
Award of the Prize
The winner will be notified within one month of the conference and will be published on the BSSH website and in the members’ Bulletin.
Any questions concerning the Richard Cox Prize should be sent to the conference organizers.
The completed paper must be submitted to the conference committee at least 1 month before the first day of the conference.
